Liberated from Methodist University, where I served as Professor of English & Writing and Director of the Writing Center, I now spend my time writing, editing, and teaching yoga, as well as offering instruction, workshops, and retreats. I’m available for private individual and group instruction. My pronouns are she, her, and hers.
Most often, I’m teaching yoga at places in the Hendersonville, Flat Rock, and Asheville area. Also, I teach an annual women’s writing and yoga retreat in Black Mountain, and I do professional editing with private clients.
My latest venture is an online literary journal, leylinesliteraryreview.net, and I hope you’ll check it out along with my books, linked on this website. Also, feel free to check out these links to two essays—the first about aging, the second about becoming a yoga teacher.

I’m a past recipient of a cosponsored National Endowment of Arts and North Carolina Arts Council Fellowship in Writing, the Al Cleveland Award for Teaching, the Best Professor of the Year Award, and the McLean Endowed Chair of English. I’ve been nominated for a Pushcart a couple of times and have won several writing awards.
When I’m not writing or professionally engaged, I’m enjoying my other passions: reading, hiking, meditating, knitting, and weaving. And I have a new novel, A Grammar of Unspeakable Things, due to be released in early 2028.
I live in the apple-orchard-filled mountains of Hendersonville, NC—about twenty-five minutes south of Asheville—with my husband, ex-colleague and fellow writer, Michael Colonnese. We moved here in November 2020, after living in Fayetteville, NC, for over thirty years.
Originally from Queens, NY, I feel that a part of me will always be a New Yorker. Jewish by birth, heritage, and culture, I mostly practice Buddhism and maintain a daily meditation practice.
Michael and I have been married for fifty years, have two grown sons, Dan and Ben, two daughters-in-law, Jennifer and Jenna, and two granddaughters, Lilly and Harper.
Dan, Jennifer, and Lilly live in Cambridge, MA, where Dan works with stocks and computers, and Jennifer is a nurse-practitioner and diabetes educator. Ben, Jenna, and Harper live in Asheville, NC, where Ben works as a glass artist and tenkara fishing guide, and Jenna works as a hair artist and small business owner. I invite you to check out Ben’s websites, www.bgcglass.com & https://www.fixedlineappalachia.com/ and Jenna’s website, https://jennacolonnese.com/
My formal education includes an MA in Literature from Binghamton University, an MFA in Writing from Vermont College of Fine Art, and yoga teacher certification from Asheville Yoga Center and from OM Yoga. Additionally, I have yoga teaching certifications in Yin Yoga, Children’s Yoga, Meditation, Prenatal Yoga, Chair Yoga, and Restorative Yoga. My MFA is in poetry, and I’ve studied most notably with Robert Creeley, Galway Kinnell, Joel Oppenheimer, Milton Kessler, Mark Doty, Richard Jackson, Lynda Hull, David Wojahn, and Susan Mitchell.
If you’re interested in a more detailed list of my credentials—courses I’ve taught, workshops and retreats I’ve facilitated, readings I’ve done, honors I’ve received, and my publications—please check out my C.V.
